Brighton Rewards Enock Mwepu With A Coaching Role

Brighton and Hove Albion has rewarded Enock Mwepu with a coaching role two months after his premature retirement from football following a hereditary heart condition.

Earlier this season, Mwepu was diagnosed with the illness while en route via airplane to join up with the Zambian national team during an international break.

The 24-year-old subsequently spent time in hospital in Mali. Further checks later revealed Mwepu’s illness was linked to a heart condition and can worsen over time if he continues playing sport.

During the announcement of his retirement in October, Mwepu hinted his intention to remain in the game and the club welcomed the move.

On Friday Brighton announced that Mwepu will take up a coaching role with the club’s under-9s starting in 2023.

“We are delighted to announce that Enock Mwepu will take up the role of under-9s coach in our academy, in the New Year” the statement read.

Club CEO Paul Barber added “We were very keen to help Enock with the next stage of his career, and we’re delighted he’s taken us up on the offer to join our academy coaching staff after an incredibly difficult time for him and his family following his diagnosis”.
