Sadio Mane Crowned Winner Of Maiden Socrates Award For His Humanitarian Work In Senegal
Senegal and Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane has been crowned as the winner of the inaugural Socrates Award for his immense humanitarian and charity works in his native country Senegal at the 2022 Ballon d’Or.
The Teranga Lion became the first recipient of the maiden prize which commemorates the achievements of footballers off the pitch.
Just last year Sadio Mané built a brand new state of the art hospital for the people of his home village of Bambaly in Casamance, western Senegal.
Even before that, the 30-year-old put up a scheme where each family in the village is paid a monthly stipend of $70 and has also provided educational funds to the pupils in the village high school.
The ‘Socrates Award’ is named after the late Brazilian footballer Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, who co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement, in opposition to the then-ruling military government.
The former Liverpool star came second only after Karim Benzema in the 2022 Ballon d’Or ranking, becoming the second African to reach the podium since George Weah in 1995.
