Manchester United Edge Out Newcastle To Lift First Trophy In Six Years

Manchester United edged out Newcastle United 2-0 in a feisty Caraboa Cup final showdown at Wembley to lift their first trophy in six years.

Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford were enough to end United’s trophy drought and secured Erik ten Hag his first major trophy as Manager of Manchester United.

The Brazilian headed in the opener from a free-kick while Rashford deflected goal came through a quick transition.

Newcastle United failed to take their chances after dominating the opening stages as Man United simmered the pressure and hit them hard in the space of six minutes.

The Magpies dominated possession from start to finish but their profligacy in front of goal meant they were leaving dangerously.

Even at 2-0 down Newcastle put in a major shift but their lack of conviction in the final third coupled coupled with United’s resilient defence derailed their efforts.

Both sides went into the game desperate for a win that could set the tone for a brighter future and it was the United side with experienced players that came out on top.

The last time Manchester United won a trophy was in 2017 when they lifted the Europa League under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. It ends their longest wait for a major trophy since 1983 when they won the FA Cup six years and five days after their previous silverware, the 1977 FA Cup.
