History of Brazilian football

Brazil is a country that breathes football. Football is everywhere here: on playgrounds, on beaches and in the rooms of small favelas. When a Brazilian boy is born, his parents already know that they will definitely send him to football.

No country in the history of football has achieved such success as Brazil. It has won five FIFA World Cups and remains the only team to have participated in every tournament. Over the years, Brazil has given the world more than one great player.

How did football appear in Brazil?

The history of Brazilian football begins in 1894, when Charles Miller, a Brazilian footballer of English origin and one of the founders of football in Brazil, returned to his homeland after a decade of living in England. During this time, he was attracted to football, which was popular in Albion, but in Brazil this sport was not heard. It was for this reason that Charles Miller, when he returned, began a movement to popularize football in the country. Ten years later, football became quite common in Brazil: São Paulo contained 60 clubs, and almost every village had its own football team.

In 1902, the first state football championship was held in São Paulo. However, the most outstanding and interesting game in the history of the birth of national football is the 1919 South American Championship, held in Brazilian districts. This event became a real catalyst for the development of football in the country.

The peculiarity of Brazilian football

A feature of Brazilian football is the priority of individual creativity over complex team tactics.

“There is no German rigor and order, Italian discipline and athleticism. But there is courage and a desire to create on the field and create football masterpieces. It is no coincidence that most of the feints (individual receptions with the ball) that world football stars have in their arsenal have Brazilian roots in one way or another, “said Sergey Skorokhodov, associate professor of the Department of Marketing and Sports Business, in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS.

Brazil has produced great football stars: Pele, three-time world champion and the greatest scorer in the history of the sport, as well as Mane Garrincha, Arthur Friedenreich, Zico, Socrates, Romario and Ronaldo.

Brazilian style

Brazilian football is known for its famous Joga Bonito style, which is based on creativity, unpredictability, speed and dribbling. In many ways, this was facilitated by democratic and free methods of teaching football.

“A player who makes a mistake because of the desire to invent a new football trick will not be severely punished here. On the contrary, with a high degree of probability, the coach will encourage the desire of talent for non-standard actions on the field. It is almost impossible to imagine something like this in European football. This is the whole essence of Brazilian football – virtuoso technique and the desire to be not only the best, but also the brightest master of the leather ball,” the expert said.

The secret of the Brazilians

Brazilian football is not just a game for the public. Most of the players here have a well-placed shot.

“The fact is that from a very early age, local boys play on the sand, since the conditions allow. They play, of course, barefoot and play all year round. Such natural loads form a very strong ankle joint in future magicians of the ball – this is what Brazilian football players are called all over the world – which makes it possible to deliver stronger and more powerful blows to the ball, “added Sergey Skorokhodov.

The legendary defender of Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team, Roberto Carlos, could deliver accurate shots on goal from 35-40 meters. Brazil has won the most World Cups – as many as five times.

Garrincha in the 1950s, Pele in the 1960s, Rivelino in the 1970s, Zico in the 1980s, Ronaldo in the 1990s, Ronaldinho in the 2000s and Neymar in the 2010s – in every era of football there is a Brazilian player who is associated with it. This will probably always be the case.

The beginning of a Brazilian legend. How a big team was born

The lifetime of legendary teams is mainly counted from some matches. But the incredible Brazil in 1958 didn’t start there. Somehow, too often, that team of Pele and his comrades was attributed exclusively to talent, and this is a big mistake. Behind the glow of incredible stars lies the biggest tactical revolution in the history of football.

Remember, the transition from 2-3-5 to 3-2-5 did not change the essence of the game. Or other modifications. It was all gradual progress, but the jump from 3-2-5 to 4-2-4 just broke the reality of the time. Brazilians have played something similar before, but these were variations where the universalism and genius of certain performers made the scheme more flexible. In 1958, the Brazilians started from the scheme, the performers were secondary factors. In general, the legendary golden composition was assembled in the process of preparation.

The main paradigm was the scheme and careful preparation. On April 2, 1958, the main part of the national team settled in a training camp. Until the 6th, all those who would later become legends gathered.

The brilliant Bella Guttmann sat out the Second World War in Brazil and therefore left a big mark on local football. His greatest legacy is the 4-2-4 formation. He gave this version of the game to the Brazilians, although he had no chance of becoming an outstanding coach in this country. They didn’t like foreigners there. Even the then very cool Paraguayan Manuel Fleitas Solic could not lead the Seleção. The team is only for our own!

The victory at the 1958 World Cup is now regarded as obvious. But then, at a time when Brazil did not dominate and no one knew about Pele, the triumph of the Selecao was not predictable.

Therefore, it was the result of a huge preparatory work.

No national team then worked as solidly as Brazil. The apologist for this process was the functionary and philanthropist Paulo Machado de Carvalho. It was he who insisted that Guttmann’s 4-2-4 formation be uncontested in the national team. It is not the people who form the scheme, but the players who select the template – for those times an absolute innovation. They wanted to invite Bella himself, but it didn’t work out. The plan to attract the best coach of the country at that time, Flavio Costa, also failed. He was cursed by his defeat at the 1950 World Cup at home, and superstitious Brazilians were picky about such things.

Therefore, the Selecao was entrusted to the eternal assistant assistant Vicente Feola. And he was given enough authority.

His first problem was the emotional balancing of the team. Truth be told, the Brazilian doesn’t like to train, he loves to play, so there are a lot of competitions and less preparation in this country than in Europe.

Therefore, we needed a psychologist Joao Carvaliaes, who conducted testing, noted all the mood swings in each collection, tried to establish what exactly caused them. Previously, Karvaläes could not even think about working with football players, why he, an authoritative and wealthy specialist in his field, needed football players. Only Paulo Machado de Carvalho’s money could have brought him to the national team.

Most often, stories are mentioned about how the psychologist Joao Carvalhães did not trust the young Pele and did not believe at all in the mental readiness for Garrincha’s games. The first episode once again emphasizes that any scientific approach, and Carvalhães as a specialist was respected not only in Brazil, is not a dogma. He did not oppose Pele, but he doubted. His story with Garrincha is special. As a true Indian, Manet perceived the world and the values of life in a completely different way than we do. Karvaläez tried to calculate with his methods a person with completely different life priorities, little similar to the generally accepted ones. And Garrincha was also very fond of fooling around. After all, Mane only took football, sex, and alcohol seriously. Everything else was perceived as nonsense.

Team doctor Ilton Gosling has done a lot for the success of the team. At the end of 1957, Gosling traveled to all the cities where the national team could play. The optimal locations for deployment were chosen. On his recommendation, we decided on the camp of the national team, and the doctor also collected information about the weather in the cities of the World Cup. It was with the help of Gosling and fitness coach Paulo Amaral that Feola back in April painted all the training sessions in Sweden by the hour, before the end of the group stage, they sketched out a rough plan for the playoffs. At the insistence of Amaral and with the consent of Gosling, they decided to arrive at the championship closer to the start, although the leaders of the delegation were inclined to arrive early. In 1993, Brazilians will simply bring low-level professional football players to different places in the United States and completely protest the impact on them of loads in an unusual climate. In 1994, the national team will become the champion.

On April 2, 1958, the 31st player was called up for the training camp. Three stages of preparation weeded out the superfluous, and there were 22 players left for the application.

Physically, the team was ready perfectly, but it was not easy to play new, reformist football. Remember, in those insanely productive times, Brazil did not concede in the first four matches of the tournament! Therefore, the legendary formula “you will score as much as you can, we will score as much as you need” looks like a banal fairy tale. Pele, Didi and Garrincha then played a fairly rational football, which they decorated with passages of their genius.
